Mobile Visibility

Have you noticed that technology is starting to shift gears from the Internet to Mobile? I read an article in the NY Times today entitled, "Do All Small Businesses Need A Mobile Strategy?" by Lora Kolodny (March 5, 2010) - and it made to valid points while reviewing last month's Mobile Premier Awards at the Mobile World Congress.

In the article, she encourages companies to try to become more visible to mobile devices from making website adjustments for mobile browsers to checking to see if your company is listed for apps like Google Maps, Yahoo Local, Nokia's On Prime Place, Microsoft's Bing Local Listings, Yelp, and Foursquare. She suggests that Text Messaging Alerts may be a great addition to marketing plans (i.e., AdMob, GetJar, Mofuse, Mippin, and MediaLets).

Definitely food for thought! Plus, so true- My blackberry is taking over my life, and before that, my Androids (even now for my Google Maps App) were a daily necessity outside of phone calls and text messaging. I'm going to have to think on this.

Student/Teacher/Entrepreneur.. Same Thing!

In this day and age, every Entrepreneur has to be a student and a teacher all of the time - every day. There's so much information to gain from online and in print, and we have to try our best to stay abreast of it all. It requires a lifestyle adaptation- we just gotta do it.

We have to make it a point to write things down, be active in the pursuit of our goals, learn from mistakes, and acquire knowledge that will allow for growth and awareness. We learn to approach life with a pen and pad of paper; staying on our toes and in the know.

I will be adding Inspiration, Cognoscenti updates, and Commentary and Reviews of several articles that I read daily- not only as a resource to those who read my blog, but also as a means to document the things that I learn in order to chart progress in my own journey. So- Welcome! :)

BusinessWeek.com :: Small Business Article Reviews

Today, I did a little reading up on BusinessWeek.com :: Awesome! I found a few articles pretty enlightening or, at the least, noteworthy.

The first was, "Land A Business Loan Despite Bad Credit" by Kevin Klein - basically gives advice on how you can better your chances for getting loans in economic hard times, amidst your bad personal credit. Maintaining authentic relationships and building repor of trust and the value of your company with clients, family, friends, and lenders seems to be the key. Business loans are hard to come by right now even for those with good credit - but when you have people on your side that truly believe in the value of you and your business, any thing's possible.

Secondly, "A New Pricing Plan to Lure "Dormant" Customers" by Radi Mohammed (based on his book entitled: 1% Windfall: How Successful Companies Use Price to Profit and Grow - HarperBusiness, March 2010). Can you believe that if Sears would raise their prices by 1%, their profits would raise by 155%? That's insane. Well, this article just highlights the value of the prices that we set for our clients - knowing what the worries of our clients are, in regard to pricing, can really open the door for new customers. Clients prefer different forms of payment plans and pricing, so it's best to give them options and be aware of what other people are doing. --BTW, did you know that Kmart has layaway? And now they have layaway online? -- The article ends saying, "What pricing plans will activate your dormant customers?" -- Good question!

Apparently, Neuroscientists are now finding that people remember things better when their clumped into groups of three or four. Companies and individuals are benefiting from the idea of using three in their campaigns - The article, "Limit Presentations to Three Themes" by Carmine Gallo, really makes me think about what ways I might be able to incorporate the number three (which is my favorite number, btw) into my business. It makes reference to Disney using this, and also the CEO of EBay, Meg Whitman, as she runs for Governor of California. Sounds pretty accurate though- I'd rather hear a common theme of "1,2,3" when someone's selling something to me then "womp, womp, womp" for 3 hours.. or even 15 minutes. It can make for a pretty useful tool for, at the least, organizing your thoughts before selling your argument, product, or service- break it down first.

My favorite one for today - which I considered just keeping to myself - is "A Bidding Strategy for a Small Consulting Firm" by Karen E Klein. Sometimes people underestimate how difficult it is just to set your prices. A lot of the work that I do with my clients starts with an analysis and/or consultation - and these things can be hard to price at times. This article gave some good advice on when to know you're aiming too low or too high - and apparently, us females usually aim too low. Some points I beamed in on were: confirm competitors rates, network with others in your industry, ask clients what they've paid in the past, look at competitors websites and brochures, provide good references, let clients meet with you and your staff, highlight testimonials in your marketing materials, and emphasize your expertise. Jenny Sutton, a partner at The RFP Company and author of Extract Value from Consultant has some great advice in this article. Along with a lot of the notes I've already mentioned she says, "Once you get to the point where you're inundated with work and unable to handle new jobs, that's a signal that you should raise prices."

"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss

--
A valuable lesson in life is to be true to yourself- and in doing so we realize and learn to value those who genuinely care about us- and find ourselves living life according to our own standards and with our own goals in mind, instead of being so saturated in the thoughts and feelings of others that we neglect to look out for ourselves first.. (Saying this to myself)..

Another note I'm keeping in mind for myself today is a Tweet Rev Run posted today on Twitter: "If in ur gut you can feel a problem creeping up a mile away:: "Be Proactive, Not Reactive".

Training myself to avoid problems, by facing them before they approach, instead of trying to avoid them when they're all in my face. How many things can I avoid by just thinking ahead and being proactive, today?.. Maybe just enough to make tomorrow that much carefree -- It's worth a try.

Good Morning!

Morning Inspiration

Grace - the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God.

Whether you're a believer or not; there's no denying that we all have experienced a time or occasion whereas we were granted with something, or treated in someway, that was greater that what we deserved.

Yesterday during lunch, I listened attentively while the CFO of the company I work for shared with us a part of his awesome testimony. At one point, he said (paraphrasing), "In the bible, you hear stories of God's people worshiping him- crying, "Holy, Holy, Holy" all day long. I've come to a place where I can just be grateful of every moment and sincerely worship and praise God for his grace over my life." It was a powerful moment.

Another thing he said was that at his turning point, he saw a bible sitting near him and he picked it up- as if he wasn't even in worthy enough of a condition to open it; yet, he did and was forever affected by that day. It was a statement that I could thoroughly relate to. Sometimes we're so hard on ourselves for our mistakes or shortcomings, and we don't realize that each and every day (and moment) we are given the opportunity to do something different and be greater. At times, we fail to believe in ourselves and take advantage of the grace that we're given.

So, today my inspiration comes from Grace- more specifically, the Grace of God over my life. I'm encouraging myself by saying, "I am worthy to receive the best in life, and I am strong and good enough - and destined - to make that journey to getting there." Furthermore, reflecting upon all that I have made it through, by grace I have made it this far (at times, felt like I wandered this far) but with faith and perseverance I will boldly step forward with purpose acknowledging that if it weren't for that grace, I would never have this opportunity. Who am I to gamble it away by not deliberately pursuing my goals and purpose?

Good Morning!

--

So too at the present time there is a remnant (a small believing minority), selected (chosen) by grace (by God's unmerited favor and graciousness). But if it is by grace (His unmerited favor and graciousness), it is no longer conditioned on works or anything men have done. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace [it would be meaningless].
Romans 11: 5-6

Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God's unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it]. Hebrews 4: 16

Morning Inspiration

Sometimes it becomes extremely tedious and frustrating trying to find ways to market a product or service - especially in an inexpensive and efficient way. But, this morning one of my best friends sent me an article called: "6 Secrets Millionaires Know That You Don't" (Oct 2006) from Entrepreneur.com. It may have been written almost 4 years ago, but it's certainly contains relevant and significant material for every entrepreneur to keep in mind.

It's very first point is about Marketing: "Everything is Marketing". At times we underestimate our strengths, which may come in the form of our detailed work ethic, stellar skills, outgoing personalities, unique fashion style- and often good looks can be the starting point to conversation and potential marketing opportunity. It doesn't take a billion bucks to establish your brand- it's about being a self-starter who can make something more out of everything they have at hand.

It's been said many ways (http://bible.cc/proverbs/18-16.htm) but one way that stands out to me is: "A gift opens doors for the one who gives it and brings him into the presence of great people." (Proverbs 18:16) When you give your best in whatever you do- people notice- and it puts you in a better position to reach your goals and meet your potential. We have to actively increase our network and find ways to brand; and ALL THE TIME.

As the Entrepreneur.com article says, "Don't wait until you're going hungry to replant the garden."

Good Morning!
